zur Zeit lese ich…
The Celestine Prophecy. Yeah, finally getting around to it after I ran across a free copy at a conference book swap table. :)
The tale is fairly forced and not gripping. The ideas are interesting, and clearly why the story was written; mainly to frame them. I'm not too far in yet, only around 100 pages, but it's interesting enough I'll probably finish it.
The "insights", however, I am finding to be a fun set of concepts to play with. I'm up to the fourth so far (in the book), and figure if I were to graciously suspend disbelief for a few moments, I personally am probably up to the fourth insight as well. The vegetarian comment amuses me, though - that somehow the ability to see auras must (of course) be heightened when one eats an entirely vegetarian diet.
I'd be curious to hear comments from anyone else who's read it, though.

The Celestine Prophecy was given to me by, of all people, my mother. She's the least philosophical person in the family. I've had the book laying around forever and never read it. Most of what I hear matches your critique, the same opinions I had about the DaVinci Code --
interesting, if poorly written.
The DaVinci Code, too, huh? Hm. Either I notice it more or there really are more poorly written books out there than when I was younger.
Younger than what?
I imagine the market is generally at permenant saturation with bad fiction. What matters is whether or not anyone is reading the bad fiction. I read the DaVinci Code because other people were reading it, I'd heard Dan Brown interviewed on NPR, and so on. It turned out to be terrible...but very interesting (once you got past the plot and character development).
And now they're making a movie. Starring Tom Hanks and the lovely Audrey Toutou (of Amelie fame).
